Co-extrusion is the process of extruding two different materials at the same time in order to form one final unique product. Instead of trying to find one material that meets all your criteria, this is a very good way to combine much needed properties. One section of your custom profile can be flexible, while the other area can be a harder material. You can find co-extrusions in products where a living hinge is required or perhaps you need a rigid trim piece, but require a flexible section for installation. This process can be done in both profile and in tube forms. For example, you can have a flexible hose with a thinner, tougher, more abrasion resistant outer surface. Co-extrusion can also be a cost savings by using a less expensive polymer in non-essential areas of a custom profile. Typically, you need materials that are similar, for example flexible PVC and rigid PVC, but Spiratex works with material suppliers to come up with special adhesive polymers which allow us to combine dissimilar material.
