Static Dissipative vs. Anti-Static

Build-up of static electricity can occur when there is sliding, rubbing, or separating of a material. When this happens to an insulating material, like plastic, the charge tends to remain in the localized area of contact between the materials. This electrostatic voltage can then be discharged via an arc or spark when the material comes in contact with a body at a sufficiently different electrical potential.

What is Electrostatic Discharge?

Electrostatic discharge (ESd), is a sudden flow of electricity between two electrically charged objects. If ESd occurs to a person, they may experience anything from a mild to a painful shock-and in extreme cases, loss of life. However, the most common casualties of ESd are sensitive electronic components, when damaged can result in equipment down-time and costly repairs.

How Do You Reduce the Risk of ESd?

Anti-static and Static Dissipative/Enhanced Conductivityplastics are used to minimize the risk of ESdand reducebreakdowns. The terms “Anti-Static” and “Static Dissipative”seem to be used interchangeably, however-there are HUGEdifferences between Anti-Static and Static Dissipative orEnhanced Conductivity materials.

Understanding these differences between antistatic vs. static dissipative or enhanced conductivity plastics will help you choose the right material for your application.

Find the Right Product

ULTREX® Antistatic was developed to aid in thereduction of buildup of static charges. This effect hasbeen achieved by incorporating an additive into thebase UHMW/PE polymer that attracts moisture from the air tothe surface of the plastic.

ULTREX® Static Dissipative/Enhanced Conductivitywas developed to aid in the dissipation of staticcharges. This effect has been achieved byincorporating a carbon based conductive additive into thebase UHMW/PE Polymer.

Custom ULTREX® Anti-static and StaticDissipative/Enchanced Conductivity profileshelpreduce the risk of ESd while providing all the sameproperties as our standard ULTREX® extrusions includinghigh impact strength and a low coefficient of friction.
